What Trades Are in Demand?

what trades are in demand

Skilled trade jobs are in more demand than ever due to multiple societal issues, such as the UK housing crisis and a nationwide skills shortage due to the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Read on to find out what trade is most in demand in the UK, and why.

What Trades Are in Demand in the UK?

A recent survey from Eureka! shows that the plumbing and heating sector are going to be the most in-demand trade throughout 2023. The online survey was taken only last month, and it investigated the intentions of 970 different consumers that planned on making home renovations and improvements throughout the year.

The most in-demand trades in the UK:

  • Plumbing/heating engineers (46%)
  • Painters and decorators (30%)
  • Electricians (27%)
  • Multi-skilled (19%)
  • General builders (19%)
  • Other (19%)

Based on this recent survey, it was discovered that over two-thirds of the households questioned are planning for some work that requires a skilled worker on their property, and this is especially consistent amongst high earners.

For instance, 8 out of 10 high earners intend to bring in a professional tradesman to carry out work at some point this year!

In addition to higher demand, it is believed that Brexit, Covid-19 and an ageing workforce have emphasised the current skills shortage within trade jobs.

What Is The Most In-Demand Trade?

According to the UK Trade Skills Index for 2023, they have noted that the skills gap for trade skills is 'alarming'. Sources from this index revealed that nearly 1 million skilled trade recruits are needed across all trades to keep up with demand. It was also revealed that an estimated 73,700 new plumbers are needed by 2032.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has also reported that over the course of the year so far, the amount of construction work has generally increased, bringing with it more job openings.

As the UK slowly installs more heat pumps instead of gas boilers, it's no wonder that plumbers and heating engineers are the most in-demand trades at the moment.
