Who is the professional carpentry course for?

Just about anybody! Anyone aged 18 or over who wishes to train as a carpenter is welcome; no matter how old you are, how experienced you are, or what gender/nationality/race you are, we would be thrilled to help you reach your goal of becoming a professional carpenter.

We at Access Training Academies developed our professional carpentry course with absolute beginners in mind, so if you are starting from scratch, this programme is likely to be far more suitable for you than other accredited carpentry courses.


Completing this course will get you the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry, a recognised industry qualification that will help you to get started as a professional carpenter. The diploma will also enable you to move on to the NVQ Level 2 Certification for experienced carpenters – see Progress Routes below for further details.

Units covered

To achieve the 6706-23 Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry, you will need to cover the following areas:
  • How to use the relevant tools and materials
  • Principles of building construction
  • Fixing flooring and roofing by fixing verge and eave components
  • How to lay floor joists/fix joist coverings
  • Installing doors and ironmongery
  • Installing service encasements, cladding, kitchen worktops & fittings
  • Maintenance – repairing doors/windows
  • Operating a circular saw
  • Manufacturing routine joinery products (from plan to assembly)

If you are interested in making the most of your career and want to add other trades to your skillset, it may be worth undertaking additional training to complement the knowledge acquired on your City & Guilds carpentry course.
