How to become PAT certified

To become a PAT Tester, you will firstly need a relevant qualification. The minimum requirement for this is the City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate for In-Service Inspections and Testing of Electrical Equipment (2377). To get started simply choose a PAT course that will provide you with one of these qualifications. Some courses won’t even require any previous experience.

What is PAT testing?

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is the process of checking electrical equipment for safety through visual inspection and electronic tests.

Due to the Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989, many people choose to get their appliances tested by a PAT tester to ensure that they are maintained properly and safely. PAT Testers are trained by enrolling onto a PAT course which will allow them to legally inspect and test portable appliances.

For instance, many landlords outsource PAT testers to carry out checks on their properties before people move in for legal reasons.

What Does a PAT Tester Do?

A PAT Certified Tester will ensure that your appliances are safe for use by inspecting and testing them against the industry standards.

This will usually start with a visual inspection of the appliance, the plug, and its lead. For some electrical equipment, they can conduct electrical test signals into the appliance to determine its integrity.

Once the appliance(s) have been tested by a competent person, the client will receive an inventory and a set of test results for each tested appliance, including a pass or fail label for each appliance. This will also include a next test due date and confirmation of the PAT Tester's signature.

What is the Salary of a PAT Tester?

As a PAT Certified Tester, you can expect to earn £32,500 per year (on average). The salary range for a PAT Tester can range anywhere from £24,000 to £36,000.

For as long as there are businesses with electrical appliances, there will always be a need for PAT testers and the opportunity to earn a decent, comfortable wage.

PAT Testing is a great skill for electricians to have under their belts. In fact, experience isn't essential to become a PAT tester, but it can be a great alternative source of income if you already have some basic electrical knowledge. So, why not level up your skills with a PAT tester course?

As a certified PAT tester, you'll be able to make money by testing the safety of office equipment, kitchen appliances, power tools, and much more.
