How Long Does an Apprenticeship Last?

An apprenticeship is a common pathway for someone looking to start a trade career. Apprenticeships are great for those with trade skills, because students are able to get hands-on experience as they learn.

By definition, an apprenticeship is where an apprentice works and studies at the same time. At least 20% of apprentice time is spent studying and completing class-based learning with their training provider, and any other time is spent working in the field, allowing them to gain work experience as they study.

If you’re considering starting an apprenticeship, one of the most commonly asked questions is 'how long does an apprenticeship last?’

How long does an apprenticeship last?

The length of an apprenticeship depends on many factors, including the course, its qualifications, and the preferences of the student.

For example, our Access Apprenticeships are flexible to allow our students a decent work/life balance. This also means they can work and study at a pace that suits them!

Typically, an apprenticeship usually lasts a minimum of at least a year, typically two, but can last for as long as five years. At Access Training, our apprenticeships will allow you to become trade-qualified in the shortest possible time frame - and you won't miss out on learning valuable trade skills!

Are traditional apprenticeships the best path for learning a trade?

Whilst apprenticeships are one of the most popular pathways for learning a trade as they offer theory and practical learning, one of the most common issues people have with apprenticeships is that they offer a reduced salary, with some apprenticeship wages starting as low as £4.81 an hour.

If you’re interested in learning a trade for hands-on learning and a decent apprenticeship wage, why not consider the paid apprenticeship pathway offered by Access Training?

Similarly to an apprenticeship, you’ll be receiving valuable work experience as you learn the course materials. The biggest difference? You’ll be receiving a paid salary for your apprenticeship work.

Your potential salary figure depends on the trade route you follow, but the earn while you learn pathway offers higher salaries than traditional apprenticeships. Access Training also offers fast track trade courses, allowing you to complete your studies and join the full-time work force faster than a typical apprenticeship.
