Are Gas Engineers in Demand?

Are Gas Engineers in Demand?

The short answer is: yes, gas engineers will always be in demand for as long as there are gas appliances in homes. This won't be any time soon, though. The EcoExperts have stated that whilst the UK is aiming for a gas supply switch to 100% hydrogen, this stage probably will not happen until the mid 2040's.

So, if you're looking to become a gas engineer, you have plenty of time. Also, there are always loads of new opportunities to upskill in the renewable gas sector.

What is the future of the gas industry?

The UK government is set on investing in renewable energy alternatives instead of gas. This is so the UK can reduce its carbon emissions and achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050

To further achieve this, it is estimated that the UK will stop using gas after 2035 and that the government will ban gas boilers from all households in 2035. There are changes happening sooner than this, though. From 2025, gas boilers will be replaced with renewable heating systems.

Are gas engineers still needed?

There are still over 23 million gas boilers in use across in the UK which require manual maintenance. As long as there are gas appliances in use, there will be a demand for gas engineers.

Naturally, you may worry about what happens once gas appliances have been completely phased out of the UK. In this case, you won't need to worry.

The gas industry and gas engineers of the UK are already taking up the challenge of the big switch by training existing gas engineers in renewable gas in the same way they do LPG. So, you will not need to worry about losing your job as a gas engineer. The industry is ready to take on the challenge and upskill their staff accordingly!

Is it worth training to become a gas engineer?

It is 100% worth training to become a gas engineer. There is still plenty of time to learn a trade and upskill. Throughout your career, you'll also be setting yourself up nicely to upskill into the renewable gas sector. In fact, the heat pump industry is actively encouraging existing gas engineers to take on heat pump installation training!

When you become a gas engineer, you will learn and develop a range of desirable transferable skills which will help your gas career go from strength to strength.
