How Tradespeople Can Prevent Tool Theft

tool theft prevention

Tool theft is a major problem for tradespeople in the UK. In 2023, there were over 44,000 tool thefts reported, with an average value of £4,470.50 per theft. This means that tradespeople are losing over £100 million worth of tools each year.

Tool theft has a significant impact on tradespeople's businesses. It can lead to lost income, increased insurance costs, and damage to reputation. In some cases, tradespeople may even be forced to close their businesses altogether.

Where Does Tool Theft Occur?

A 2024 study by Tradespeople Against Tool Theft recorded that 76% of UK tradespeople have had their tools stolen from their van. Their 2022 study also recorded:

  • 39% of thefts were from vans outside the worker's home
  • 28% of thefts were from building sites
  • 15% of thefts were from customer's homes

Here are some additional facts and figures about tool theft in the UK:

  • The most common tools stolen are power tools, such as drills, saws, and nail guns.

  • Plumbers and heating engineers are particularly vulnerable to tool theft.

  • Tool theft is most common in major cities, but it can happen anywhere.

  • Only a small percentage of tool theft cases are solved.

Tool Theft Prevention

There are a number of things that tradespeople can do to protect themselves from tool theft, such as:

  • Invest in security measures for your vans and tools. This could include things like van locks, tool tracking devices, and alarms.

  • Be mindful of where you park your van. Avoid parking in isolated areas or at night.

  • Remove tools from your van at night if possible. If this is not possible, make sure that the tools are well-hidden and secured.

  • Mark your tools with your details. You can use a permanent marker or engraving.

  • Register your tools. Record serial numbers and register your tools on a database.

  • Consider tool theft insurance. This can help cover for any expensive loss or damages.

By taking these precautions, you can help to protect yourself and your business from thieves and get back to focusing on what you do best - serving your customers - without the constant worry of tool theft.
