Energy Bills: Is Gas or Electric Cheaper?

Energy Bills: Is Gas or Electric Cheaper?

The UK is currently in the eye of a storm called the Global Energy Crisis, but our tiny island seems to be taking harsh hits in comparison to other countries. In the UK, we're particularly affected because 85% of our households use gas boilers to heat homes, and 40% of electricity is generated within our gas-fired power stations. This is higher than any other European country.

Due to this, many people have been left wondering whether gas or electric is cheaper in an attempt to curb the increasing energy bills.

What is Cheaper Per Unit Cost / Cost Per KWh?

The truth is, the answer depends on the way you compare gas and electricity. If you base your answer on the cost per kilowatt hour (kWh) then you will find that gas is cheaper, based on this measurement alone.

  • Gas: 10p/kWh
  • Electric: 34/kWh

Is Gas or Electric Heating Cheaper?

It's important to note that gas and electric heating cost is made up of the unit cost, which is above. In addition to this, there is also a standing charge, which currently stands at:

  • Gas standing-charge: 28p per day
  • Electricity standing-charge: 46p per day

Things get a bit different when we look at the cost of gas and electric heating installation. The cost of installation depends on the size of your property and the specific work you'd like done, but generally the costs are as followed for each type of heating:

  • Gas heating system: £5,250
  • Electric heating system: £3,790

As you can see, it's important to take into account all of the costs associated with both gas and electricity, including installation costs.

Is Gas or Electric Heating more Energy Efficient?

Electric is now so popular due to its 100% efficiency. There is no wastage of energy, as all energy used is converted straight into heat.

Alternatively, 50% of the heat produced by a boiler can be lost through the pipes. If you look at the question from the angle of energy efficiency, you will get more value for your money in the long term by using energy efficient electricity.

Is Gas or Electric Cheaper to Maintain?

If you have an electric heater, there's very little maintenance involved. It's one of the major benefits of opting for electricity over gas. The only thing you'll need to do is clean your appliances once or twice a year, preferably before winter when your heating will see an increase in usage.

On the other hand, a gas central heating system requires servicing once a year, starting from around £100.
