Can AI Replace My Job as a Plumber?

Can AI Replace My Job as a Plumber?

AI has become a much debated topic over the past few months, with many people feeling concerned about the impact that AI will have on them and their job security. Whilst many industries are feeling the pressure of job uncertainty because of AI, the plumbing industry is not.

What Does a Plumber Do?

A plumber’s job contains many responsibilities. It is not just about fixing a leaky pipe or a clogged drain. From installing and maintaining plumbing systems to troubleshooting and repairing, a plumber’s job is essential to society.

Plumbers have to be analytical and great at problem-solving, often under pressure, to ensure that if someone has an issue with their plumbing, it is resolved quickly and efficiently. They also have to carry out the repairs themselves meaning they both identify issues and fix them, something an AI tool cannot do.

As well as the above, part of a plumber’s job is to build rapport with their customers. The work often involves entering people’s home, so it’s important that the customer feels comfortable with their plumber and they trust them. It’s difficult to feel that same level of trust is your plumber was AI generated.

The Future of Plumbing

Whilst AI won’t replace a plumber, some tools can be used to help them complete their work more efficiently. Some tools and apps can help plumbing professionals with their scheduling and administration, their finances and even purchasing stock and equipment.

However, the core of the plumbing profession – the hands-on work and problem-solving – will continue to be a human domain.

Why become a plumber?

Job security

Plumbers will always be in demand, they play a huge role as essential workers in the UK and is a fundamental service, ensuring that business and homes function.

Opportunity

The UK is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled workers, specifically in the construction and trades industry. An estimated 150,000 workers are needed to meet the government’s plan to build 1.5 million houses in the next 5 years, meaning there is plenty of opportunity for those looking to get into the trades.

Financial rewards

Becoming a plumber offers great financial prospects, whether you choose to become employed or self-employed. The average salary for a qualified plumber in London is £36,000 per year (glassdoor) but there are plenty of ways for plumbers to increase their earnings.
