Electrical Theory Training: Learn the Basics!

Electrical Theory Training

Whether you’re looking to train as an electrician or you’re just curious about how electricity works, understanding the basics of electrical theory is the first step. Electrical theory training is crucial as it provides the foundation for understanding and working with electrical systems safely and competently – skills that are essential whether you’re an engineer, electrician or just a DIY enthusiast.

What Is Electrical Theory?

Electrical theory explains how electricity behaves and interacts within systems. It encompasses the fundamental principles of how electricity is generated, transmitted and utilised.

Electrical theory is usually combined with hands-on practice, so expect to also work with multimeters, circuit diagrams, resistors, wiring tools and components.

Key Concepts in Electrical Theory Training

Voltage (V)

Voltage is the “push” that drives an electrical current through a circuit. Specifically, voltage is measured as the difference in electrical energy between two points in a circuit.

Current (I)

Current is the flow of electrical charge, typically electrons, through a conductor.

Resistance (R)

Resistance is the opposition to the flow of electric current in a circuit, measured in ohms.

Ohm’s Law

Ohm’s Law is a fundamental law connecting voltage, current and resistance that can help you calculate unknown values in a circuit ( V = 1 x R).

Power (P)

Power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed or produced, measured in watts (W). (P = V x 1)

Why Do I Need to Know Electrical Theory?

If you’re looking to become an electrician, it is essential that you have a strong grasp of electrical theory so that you can analyse and troubleshoot problems systematically and understand how different electrical components interact. It is also crucial that you understand the dangers of electricity in order to ensure safe working practices.

Plus, electrical theory is often required for licensing and certification in the electrical trade, so if you want to qualify as an electrician, you will need to brush up on your basics!
