Gas Safety Week: Why Is It Important To Be Compliant and Gas Safe?

Now in its 14th year, Gas Safety Week raises awareness on safe gas practices to ensure that gas and heating engineers working with gas systems are compliant and responsible when conducting their work.

Why is Gas Safety Important?

When working with gas, it is incredibly important that Gas Engineers know the risks and how to be safe when completing their work.

In 2022, there were 86 registered deaths in the UK due to carbon monoxide poisoning (ONS, 2024). These deaths are a tragic example of how important it is that all gas systems are safe, registered, installed and maintained by a qualified professional as poor practice can result in tragic loss of life.

Why Do Gas Engineers Have to be Gas Safe Registered?

Gas Engineers in the UK MUST be gas safe registered to ensure that they have the correct qualifications and are competent when working with gas. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 made it a legal requirement for gas engineers in the UK to be registered with the Gas Safe Register to carry out gas work. This regulation came into force on April 1, 1998.

What Do I Need to Become Gas Safe Registered?

Gas Safe Engineers need to have suitable qualifications and your ACS (Advanced Competency Scheme) to be able to apply for the Gas Safe Register in the UK. Our Professional Gas course will get you the qualifications you need to be able to apply.

How Do I stay Gas Safe After I Register?

Gas Engineers must renew their registration every two years to ensure they are meeting industry standards and are compliant. Gas engineers need to stay up-to-date with the latest regulations and industry best practices to ensure that their work remains safe and compliant and that consumers can trust that the person completing work in their home is safe. Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses can also help Gas Engineers understand new changes in the trade or keep their skills to the latest industry standard.

Gas Safety Week runs from Monday 9th September to Sunday 15th September this year. You can find out more and access resources on the Gas Safety Week website.
