Gas Course Overview
Traditionally, it has been almost impossible for anyone wishing to enter the lucrative Gas industry, to get ‘CORGI’ or ‘Gas Safe Registered after undertaking gas engineer training. At best it used to typically take at least 2 years to complete a gas course.

But now Access Training has a bespoke gas training and a Gas Engineer training programme specifically designed for new entrants and those with no experience with the ambition to change their career and become a qualified Gas Engineer. This is an in depth gas course covering all aspects of domestic gas safety as laid down by the ACS scheme; it is also recognised by Gas Safe Register as a managed learning gas engineer training programme.

There is no need to gain a level 3 plumbing qualification as this gas course assumes you have little or no experience as all of the gas engineer training we provide is designed to assist the candidate to achieve the required standard to work within the Gas Industry.

The gas course itself is a combination of practical workshop and classroom theory and study. The class sizes are small and your tutor checks on your progress on your gas engineering training regularly to make sure your work and your understanding is at the correct level. The work you produce during these phases of the gas course is recorded in your portfolio as evidence of your completion of each element of your gas engineer training which is then recorded and retained for Accreditation Bodies to verify the results. These strict control methods safeguard all gas course candidates and assessors and ensure that accurate, quality gas engineer training is being delivered at all times.

This process and the gas course itself is widely recognised and is the recommended route for anyone looking to undertake gas courses and gas engineer training to become Gas Safe Registered.

This gas course is delivered in 4 stages:
Stage 1) NICEIC Elementary Gas Certificate for Gas Engineer Training
Stage 2) Gas Portfolio Completion and Work based Competence
Stage 3) ACS Assessment (CCN1 – Core Domestic Gas Safety + 4 Appliances)
Stage 1) NICEIC Elementary Gas Certificate

This is a modular gas course that provides the underpinning knowledge and practical gas engineer training for candidates to be able understand fully basic principles of gas, gas appliance functions, pipework skills, gas flues and the principles of combustion. This knowledge then allows the candidate to progress onto the next areas of gas engineer training that cover more in depth areas for the remainder of the gas course. This includes current legislation and how it is applied, tightness testing, technical pipe work requirements, gas safety principles, ventilation and unsafe situations.
Stage 2) Gas Portfolio Completion and Work based Competence

After completing your 4 weeks of gas engineer training within the training centre, you will then progress onto a work placement that will see you working alongside a qualified Gas Engineer. The gas engineer training you have received has proven you competent to complete the gas course portfolio. The Gas Engineer, who will be Gas Safe Registered will act as your verifier, signing off against the work that you have produced. The engineer will be helping you to build and complete your portfolio that forms the primary evidence needed to prove your complete competency as part of your gas engineer training.

Before you set out on your placement you will be provided with an NICEIC portfolio that gives instruction and guidance and how to gather your evidence as part of the gas course. In addition Access Training’s gas engineer training and assessment staff are available to offer support and help if you come across any problems or have queries whilst you are working through the portfolio building part of the gas course.

Access Training has a large network of Gas Safe registered companies and engineers who will be only too willing to take you out onsite in order to complete your portfolio. Once this stage of your gas engineer training has been successfully completed, you will receive your NICEIC Elementary Gas Course Certificate and ready to move onto stage 3 of the gas course to complete your ACS assessments.
Stage 3) ACS Assessment (CCN1 – Core Domestic Gas Safety)

Once your gas engineer training portfolio has been completed to the standards required by our Gas Assessors, you will then move onto CCN1 plus appliances part of the gas course. Leading to future Gas Safe Registration. All operatives and engineers involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances will undertake this gas engineer training to conform to the ACS scheme. It is designed with the purpose of ensuring that every operative has the correct level of skill and understanding relating directly to British standards, which must be complied with at all times for the safety purposes of the customer and the engineer.

The gas course assessments for CCN1 consists of 5 days and includes the following elements:

1. Gas Safety Regulations, British Standards and Manufacturers' Instructions.
2. Emergency Procedures, Labels and Warning Notices.
3. Unsafe Situations, and Related Documentation.
4. Combustion, Gas Rates, Burner/Installation Pressures.
5. Testing for Tightness, Purging and Relighting Appliances.
6. Pipework and Fittings.
7. Operation of Appliance Gas Safety Devices and Controls.
8. Ventilation.
9. Flueing Standards, Installation and Testing.

You could then be assessed after gas engineer training on the following appliances:
1. CEN1 – Central Heating Boilers
2. CKR1 – Domestic Cookers
3. HTR1 – Gas Fires & Wall Heaters
4. WAT1 – Water Heaters
