Part P Domestic Electrical Installers Course

(EAL Domestic Electrical Installer, Part P Certificate)
Course overview
The Part P Domestic Installer Course is designed for anyone wanting to carry out domestic electrical installation tasks. This course allows you to gain certification that is a ‘bench mark’ qualification that proves your competency. This is because since January of 2005 all fixed electrical installations in dwellings must be suitably designed, installed, inspected and tested so as to provide reasonable protection against them becoming a source of a fire or a cause of injury to persons.

The course will enable you to proficiently install your domestic electrical work, compliant with Building Regulations Part P. After gaining your EAL VRQ Certificate, you are able to register to become a competent domestic electrical installer, with the ability to install, inspect, test and certify your work in accordance with BS 7671.

In addition to this you will then be able to register with a Competent Person Self-Certification Scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA, where you can self-certify your installation work and provide your customers with a Part P compliant certificate (you will need to gain your 17th Edition qualification). Please note that if you are working on domestic electrical installations and you don’t have this qualification you will need to notify Building Control directly, who then send out an inspector to inspect, test and certificate the installation (a significant additional charge will be incurred for this service, costing hundreds of pounds) so gaining this qualification makes financial sense as well.
Who is this qualification for?
This Part P training has been developed with plumbers and heating engineers in mind, though it will also be suitable for Builders, Plumbers, Heating Engineers, Kitchen Fitters, Alarm Installers, Loft Conversion Companies, Landscape Gardeners, Electric Garage Door Fitters plus anyone else carrying out domestic installation work. Always remember that Part P applies to all domestic fixed electrical installations and in gaining your Part P qualification you will be allowed to work on all fixed installations connected after the supplier's meter in buildings or parts of buildings. These areas include:
  • Electrical work in dwellings (houses, flats, apartments etc) i.e. re-wires, installation of kitchen lighting, power showers, moving sockets.
  • Combined dwellings and business premises having a common supply (such as shops, pubs etc)
  • Common access areas in blocks of flats (but not lifts).
  • Shared amenities in blocks of flats (such as laundries, gymnasiums etc).
  • Outbuildings, including sheds, garages and greenhouses.
  • Garden lighting and power supplies (including spas, security lighting etc).
  • Parts of fixed electrical installations external to premises, such as in gardens, (sheds, detached garages etc).
  • Extensions and loft conversions (The safety requirement will be applicable to alterations and additions to existing installations, including rewires, as well as to the new construction.
This requirement for consequential remedial work is a departure from the normal Building Regulations approach.)
