Design, Erection & Verification of Electrical Installations Course
(City & Guilds 2391-20 Certificate in the Design, Erection & Verification of Electrical Installations BS7671:2008 Level 3)
Course overview
Before any electrical installation work is carried out, a detailed drawing may need to be produced and calculations have to made, for instance when a domestic installation is going to be carried out. The size of the cable needs to be calculated after considering the length and type of cable that is required plus many other factors.
Design work and calculations also need to be carried out for industrial or commercial installations to ensure the safety of the personnel performing the installation and of the safety of the system for the end user. A detailed set of calculations are going to need to be produced as the regulations may have changed and the existing circuits and components may not be acceptable and are in need of altering or replacing.
What this course will do with regards to this, is equip all course participants with the vital skills and knowledge to produce designs for electrical installations. This is an advanced course and is designed for experienced personnel working on electrical installations and in the wider electrical industry.
Who is this qualification for?
Although the City & Guilds do not state that there is a need for any formal entry requirements, this course is not suitable for non-qualified electricians and/or those who do not have experience in inspecting, testing and certifying electrical installations. The qualification is designed for those personnel who already have an involvement in associated electrical work. It is intended for those working with electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation, and inspection and testing processes. This was previously covered under the 2400 design qualification along with, the erection and verification of electrical installations. The City & Guilds Certificate in design, erection and verification of electrical installations is its replacement.
The curriculum uses practical examples of how electrical installations should be designed and consists of numerous design exercises for each candidate to carry out. Therefore each candidate should already have their City & Guilds 2382, 17th Edition and their City & Guilds 2391, Inspection & Testing Certificates as they will be using a broad range of electrical installations from small domestic circuits to more complex commercial and industrial scenarios.

Progress routes
Completing this electrical qualification represents an achievement of the highest possible award. Therefore the next step for anyone wishing to progress is to consider adding another trade to their portfolio. Undertaking the plumbing NVQ2 would be an idea step as it ensures that you as a student will have the practical experience as well as theoretical knowledge of the plumbing discipline. This provides students who successfully complete the course with a good grounding for a long and prosperous career in the plumbing sector. However, we consider it essential that the plumbing career is considered to be ‘progressional’ in that every student should add more skills and qualifications as they gain experience to further their career.
Our plumbing courses provide this clear progression route, helping learners to achieve the career goals they aspire to. Successful candidates also attend some of the following courses to increase their earning potential and to meet the demands of the industry:
- Gas Foundation Course
- ACS Gas Accreditation (for Gas Safe Registration)
- Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems
- WRAS Water Regulations
- Part L Energy Efficiency
- Solar Domestic Hot Water Heating
- EAL Part P – Domestic Electrical Installer
With these skills and qualifications you can progress to a higher level of work during your career and you can for example, move on to work in the Building Services Industry in roles such as Project Management further down the line. This helps those who wish, to progress from skilled occupations into technical, supervisory or managerial posts. The Gas Systems pathway for instance that forms part of the Level 3 Domestic Plumbing NVQ also provides candidates with a direct route to becoming certified through the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) to work safely in the gas industry.
